Full Mouth Restoration Q & A

What is restorative dentistry?

Full mouth restoration refers to rebuilding or restoring all of the teeth in your mouth. This procedure is appropriate for people who have such significant dental problems throughout their mouths that they must be treated comprehensively to create a healthy, fully-functioning mouth that also looks great.

What conditions may qualify for full mouth restoration?

Each person is individually evaluated to see if they qualify for full mouth restoration. While the decision is between you and your dentist at About Smiles, there are a variety of dental conditions that could make you a candidate for full mouth restoration:

  • Missing multiple teeth
  • Numerous teeth with large fillings that are failing
  • Severely worn or eroded teeth
  • Injured or broken teeth
  • Traumatic injuries to the mouth
  • Congenital disorders
  • Severe gum disease

What dental procedures might be performed during a full mouth restoration?

Various types of dental treatment may be used during a full mouth restoration, depending on what’s found during your dental examination. To determine what treatments are necessary, your dentist will evaluate all aspects of your mouth.

Teeth: The dentist will examine your mouth and make note of cavities, worn or eroded teeth, cracked or impacted teeth, bite problems, and loose or missing teeth. You may need porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays, bridges, or implants, to name just a few possibilities.

Gums: Gum disease must be repaired with removal of plaque and deep cleaning under the gum line. A bone graft may be needed if infection has caused deterioration.

Jaw joints and muscles: You should have the ability to chew properly and a bite that fits when you close your mouth. Otherwise, teeth can wear unevenly and you may develop temporomandibular joint problems.

Esthetics: The color, shape, size, and proportion of your teeth will be evaluated and corrected.

How long will full mouth restoration take?

Once you get started on a full mouth restoration, you may be anxious to get all the work done, but be prepared for a process that takes some time. Most full mouth restorations require multiple phases and office visits.

When your dentist at About Smiles reviews the treatment plan with you, you’ll see the stepwise process that proceeds logically. In addition to the actual dental work, the treatment plan must consider healing time between procedures and include time to manufacture crowns, bridges, or other pieces. It’s reasonable to expect the process to take a year, but the time frame depends on the extent of your work.
