Children’s Dentistry Specialist

Parents are often surprised when they learn that children should have their first full dental exam by the age of three years, but that may be too late considering many children get cavities as early as age two. The dentists at About Smiles in Austin and Round Rock, Texas, welcome all members of the family, including the youngest children. They enjoy making children’s early dental experiences as warm and comfortable as possible. Contact us to arrange your child’s first appointment. We love kids and look forward to a long, happy relationship.

Children’s Dentistry Q & A

When should your child first meet the dentist?

Children should visit the dentist around the age of one year, but it’s not for real dental work. The purpose of this visit is to introduce them to the dentist, let them see the instruments, and get comfortable with the environment under non-threatening circumstances. The dentist will try to do a quick visual exam, but only if the child is comfortable.

This first visit has another purpose -- to answer any questions parents may have about taking care of their child’s teeth. The team at About Smiles provides information about:

  • Cavity prevention
  • Fluoride needs
  • Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, lip sucking
  • Developmental milestones
  • Normal teething
  • Healthy nutrition

The next checkup will be scheduled based on each child’s dental needs. Children who are anxious will benefit from coming in often enough to gradually get comfortable with the dentist.

Why is it important to take care of baby teeth?

Baby teeth may be short-lived, but they’re just as important as adult teeth. Babies and children need their teeth to chew food and speak properly. Additionally, baby teeth are like place holders that save the space needed for adult teeth to grow in properly.

The baby’s two front teeth, upper and lower, should come in between six and 12 months. Tooth decay can begin as soon as the teeth have grown in, so it’s important to clean your baby’s teeth with a soft cloth or infant toothbrush.

When should children get their first dental checkup?

Most children have a set of 20 teeth by the time they reach the age of three years, so this is when they should have a thorough dental checkup. During this exam, your dentist at About Smiles may recommend dental sealants. Sealants are easily and painlessly applied to molars, where they create a barrier that protects against decay.

This exam may include X-rays, but your dentist will talk with you about whether they’re needed. Some children may not need their first X-rays until the age of six when their permanent teeth begin to appear.

Using advanced technology, we can take a high-resolution image of teeth using a slim hand-held device. The image is projected onto a screen in the exam room, so children can enjoy seeing their own teeth while the dentist looks for signs of decay and other dental problems.
