Root Canals

Sometimes a tooth sustains severe trauma or extensive decay, and a regular filling won’t solve the problem. We believe in conservative dentistry, so we will try to protect your original teeth and conserve healthy tissue whenever possible. To save your tooth and alleviate pain, Dr. Smith or Dr. Day may suggest root canal therapy.

Your teeth contain three layers, the hard outer coating of enamel, an inner layer of dentin, and the nerve at the center, also called the pulp. Damage to the pulp can kill the tooth and allow infection to build. Without proper treatment, you could face tooth loss and serious damage to the bone and supporting tissue.

Signs that Indicate You May Need a Root Canal

  • A persistent or recurring abscess on the gums
  • Extreme pain when chewing or with the application of pressure
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Prolonged sensitivity to cold or hot temperatures
  • Swelling and tenderness in the surrounding gums

During a root canal, your dentist will make a small hole in the tooth, remove the diseased tissue, and disinfect the inside cavity. The doctor will then seal the tooth with a crown. People often avoid root canal therapy because they believe the procedure will cause them pain. However, discomfort actually comes from the infection and related pressure, so most patients feel much better after treatment.
